In the past couple of months, Mark and Francis will have tasted thousands of wines. From those wines, probably a couple hundred wind up on the 'consider' list, with relevant notes. From those compiled notes, we choose a few dozen to bring in. Some have gotten the golden buzzer treatment and have already arrived in our cellar. Some are in-bound with expected delivery this month. This is always an exciting time of year for us, made even more so with the launch of stageleftwineshop.com !  We can honestly say that this is a banner year, full of exciting new stuff and great new vintages from some old friends.

Our annual fall wine tasting will occur on Thursday, October 26th.  We're going to present you with a rigorous selection of 25 of our best new wines.  We will also have a few interesting food products and I might even have a few bargain mixed case 'sawdust' lots from our cellar.  The cost will be $25 per person, applied to the purchase of your first case of wine.  This is perfect timing for you to stock up on all the wine you need for the holidays, yourself and gift-giving season.

Orson Welles' DRACULA: A Staged Radio Play

FEATURING: Danielle Illario, Jason Jackson, and Laurence Mintz. With Alex Dawson.
 

Count Dracula travels from the Carpathian Mountains to London where he preys on the virtuous Mina, daughter of Dr. Seward. He calls in a specialist, Dr. Van Helsing, to diagnose the sudden deterioration of Mina's health. Van Helsing, realizing that Dracula is indeed a vampire, tries to prepare Mina's fiance, John Harker, and Dr. Seward for what is to come and the measures that will have to be taken to prevent Mina from becoming herself one of the undead.               

Fun Fact: The first audio play ever staged by radio bad-boy Orson Welles and his Mercury Theater on Air (later responsible the notorious War of the Worlds). Welles searched for long and hard for the perfect sound of a stake being driven through the heart of the vampire. 

His sound team first presented a savoy cabbage and a sharpened broomstick for Welles's approval. "Much too leafy," Welles concluded. "Drill a hole in the cabbage and fill it with water. We need blood." When that sound experiment also failed to satisfy Welles, he asked for a watermelon.

The New Yorker recalled the effect: "Welles stepped from the control booth, seized a hammer, and took a crack at the melon. Even the studio audience shuddered at the sound."

The Hagan family at Antiquum do things a little differently...well, a LOT differently. I posted the pictures above to give you a small glimpse into just how they run their farm (and their lives).

I'm never interested in a wine-maker's story unless I like the wines. The more I like the wines, the more I am interested in the story behind them. Here we have compelling wines, completely in line with the compelling story of the family that makes them. I'm in love with both...and I want you to be as well. So come to dinner and try them...no, not try,drink them with me and come meet Stephen and take in a little of how life and wine intertwine.

Stephen and his wife Niki planted every single vine on their property...by hand...themselves. They run a farming operation that is unbelievable in its integrity. They use horses for 90% of the work and they manage the soil with a collection of sheep, dogs, chickens and geese (come to the dinner to hear exactly how), sourcing all fertilizer from the property.

They founded Antiquum Farm out of a desire to raise their children in a similar way to Stephen’s childhood, and to do wonderful things while surrounded by beauty. Their children, Daisy and son Juel, are actively engaged in the growing and making of Antiquum Farm wines. Daisy is a competent horsewoman and responsible for all daily care of their equine partners. She also manages the poultry flock. Throughout the growing season she scouts the vineyard on horseback almost daily.

Juel has forsaken horses for skateboarding. However, he is keenly interested in shepherding, wine growing/making, and cooking. He has a pretty decent palette for a 9 year old and has recently been learning to run farm equipment and take part in blending trials for our wines.

I was barely managing my paper route at twelve. Two words for the Hagans and their kids: Mad Respect...and the wines are fantastic.
