The Beau family is one of the oldest Bouilleurs de Cru (artisanal cognac distillers) in Segonzac, the heart of Cognac’s first growth, known as the Grande Champagne region. Samuel Beau started distilling in 1895, bottling and selling part of his Cognac under his own name, which at that time was quite unusual. Following Samuel’s death in 1914, his son Paul took over the family business. While he kept distilling, he decided to stop bottling and sold most of the spirit.
In 1977, The House of Beau began to bottle under the family name once again. The family, meticulously tends to its 200 plus acres and continues to bottle their cognacs under the Maison Paul Beau brand as an homage to their ancestors. A majority of the vineyard is planted to Ugni Blanc grape with a tiny fraction Colombard also grown. Olivier Laurichesse is the master distiller today.
The oldest Cognac ever released by Maison Paul Beau is the 60 Year Old "Lignee de Samuel." Each year 60 bottles are available in the US. This superb bottling has the reputation of being pure “liquid rancio”, the climax of pure, old and great brandies. On Thursday, December 18th, we will open one of the sixty bottles of this precious liquid that made it to our shores. We will pour one ounce portions at cost. I look forward to sharing it with you.
December 26, we will pour a lovely Cognac from another small producer: Gourry de Chadeville.
How exciting!
