Spain is one of the most exciting food and wine destinations in the world. Rioja is the most universally recognized and respected wine region in Spain. The Artacho family, of Bodegas Riojanas has been making some of the most respected wines of the region since the 18th century. The name may seem confusing, for Bodegas Riojanas translates somewhat directly "Rioja Cellars." When the denominacion was established in 1925, The Artacho family had been using this mark and so they were permitted to keep using it. Only their wines can use it to this day. Their wines are deeply rooted in the traditions of Rioja and age beautifully, but they also offer more forward fruit and accessibility than some of the strictly traditionalist producers. They're really elegant, beautiful, rich and complex wines.
I had the distinct pleasure of dining with Santiago Frías, Director General of Bodegas Riojanas, this past summer. We tasted through a vertical and horizontal selection of his wines over lunch. I was blown away. I have encountered these wines only sparingly over the years and never in a comprehensive tasting. Wow. These wines are amazing and so is this man. I asked him to come to New Brunswick so that he might dine with all of us and share his own insights on a selection of his extraordinary wines. I invite you to join us. These wines are a real discovery and they're also exceedingly food-friendly. We had a ton of fun putting together a menu to surprise and delight.
Please do join Santiago Frías and Mark, Lou and me for dinner on Wednesday October 9th at 7 PM
