Aquavit does not appear nearly often enough in the cocktail lexicon. Traditionally a Norse beverage, aquavit is a clear spirit, most commonly associated with it's signature flavor and aroma of caraway. I'll admit, this can be a little strange to get used to and many of the aquavit I've encountered have been rather rough around the edges and sometimes quite hot with alcohol.
One of my favorite Aquavit in the world is actually produced right here in The Good Old US of A. Krogstad is made by the same people who make Aviation Gin; House Spirits out in Corvallis, Oregon. It's not a rustic or rough-hewn spirit at all. It's a very clean spirit. The alcohol is in check and the caraway and star anise are just beguiling on the nose and in the rather pronounced finish.
While great for sipping, it's a cocktail ingredient all unto itself. We've created a cocktail featuring the Krogstad Aquavit. The Nordic Fix is a lovely combination of Aquavit, Cognac, Lemon, Honey and Fresh Lavender. It's crisp, clean, fragrant and bracing.
