Hirsch Small-Batch 28-Year Reserve Bourbon
Suggested retail price: $375 per bottle. Tonight we're pouring 1 ounce for $11.50.
A.H. Hirsch was a distillery in Pennsylvania that went bust. Back in the day, they produced a lot of really great spirits. Hirsch was acquired out of bankruptcy along with the stocks remaining in both bottle and in cask. The name was also acquired and is used now on many different categories of whiskey. While that may sound a little confusing, to the point of misleading, Mark and I have been consistently impressed with the quality of almost all of the spirits released under the Hirsch label.
28-years is a long time for Bourbon. It's not uncommon to see a Scotch whisky this age, but you don't generally see Bourbon aged this long. It's warmer in Kentucky than it is in the Highlands of Scotland, and the mash bill (ingredient list) for Bourbon is very different from Scotch. The former is at least 51% corn and the latter is malted barley. I'm as curious as you to sample this rare old bird. The first ounce out of the bottle is therefore reserved for yours truly! I look forward to seeing you tonight!
