By all accounts, General Harrison was a son of a gun (and I don't mean gun). He won a lot of battles in The Civil War but at the cost of a great many lives. I'm in no position to comment on his militay record, but his partcular contribution to the cockail world is in my area of expertise. General Harrison's eggnog was detailed in the first American cocktail book, by Jerry Thomas. It's a very simple eggnog based in apple cider rather than on cream or milk. The result is a light and lively eggnog that not need be reserved until the end of dinner. It's just perfect this time of year. A dear friend and cocktailian whipped up a batch of these for me at my house on New Year's Day. We were recovering from the prior evening's revelry and they proved the perfect tonic.
Tonight in Catherine Lombardi, we'll serve General Harrison's Eggnog for $8. We will pass hors d'oeuvres until 9 PM and the most tasteful cocktail enthusiasts of The Garden State will be in attendance, as is their custom. I hope you will join us.
