The Crossroads Theater was once the pre-eminent African-American theater company in the nation. In fact, they were one of the best small theater companies in the nation, period! When Mark and I were just 21, we were privileged to see amazing things at Crossroads that went on to tour the nation and to win Tony awards. In our younger and more vulnerable years, we were the unofficial bartenders to The Crossroads cast and crew many many nights. The friendships we made with so many talented people continue to be a source of great happiness in our lives.
Crossroads fell on some hard financial times several years ago and they have not mounted a robust season for quite a while. They're working their way back to viability however; and the show that's currently playing is really just amazing. Our old friend Andre De Shields (who was in the original cast of Ain't Misbehavin) directs a raucous, joyful performance that is meeting rave reviews.
